As Pittsburgh welcomes a blanket of cooler temperatures, residents may have to brace for frosty conditions, especially those north of the city and in the higher elevations. An advisory from the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh detailed a forecast that included patchy frost early this morning that could linger until 9 AM EDT.
Showery weather is also part of the bargain today, bringing temperatures down to 10-15 degrees below the norm for mid-October, the advisory continued. Those in northeast West Virginia may even glimpse snow mingling with the rain. However, dear to the hearts of winter enthusiasts, little accumulation is expected outside of a transient dusting on grassy surfaces.
Tonight's crystal ball looks chillier still. If the skies are clear and the winds ease up, the area might need another frost or freeze advisory. Yet the forecast isn't set in stone. Cloud cover and restless models have forecasters watching closely—as they put it, there's low confidence in predicting the exact conditions.
Looking ahead to midweek, showers are predicted to swoop back in come Wednesday. Thanks to lake-enhanced showers, additional frost and freeze headlines may be needed Wednesday night, once again conditional on cloud cover, according to the advisory. And as the workweek bids adieu, temperatures are expected to rise toward the weekend, promising a reprieve from the recent chill with drier and warmer days.
In terms of aviation, the near-term forecast might have pilots frowning slightly. VFR conditions will likely dip in the morning, with MVFR CIGs anticipated across various terminals. Showers might dash through certain areas, potentially impacting visibility, but overall, it's just another day with Pittsburgh's skies taking a moodier turn.
