In North Homewood, an area recently troubled by increasing violence, a joint operation by Violence Prevention Unit officers and Narcotics detectives on Wednesday resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old male. Identified as Zyjuan Newton, the individual is a "person not to possess a weapon," authorities state. According to the City of Pittsburgh, Newton was taken into custody following a confrontation with law enforcement.
It was just before 9:30 p.m. when officers, recognizing the male based on his known status, engaged him. As officers attempted to ask questions, Newton began arguing, turning his body away when inquired about what he was carrying on his right side. Despite being informed of an impending search, it was amid this resistance that detectives unearthed a stolen gun.
Newton faced immediate charges which include "Persons not to Possess, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Receiving Stolen Property, Resisting Arrest and Prohibited Acts," as per the City of Pittsburgh. The arrest took place at the intersection of Sterrett Street and Hermitage Street, a crossroads shadowed lately by the specter of violence that law enforcement is striving to dispel.
