Port St. Lucie was the scene of multiple accidents yesterday morning, as emergency services responded to two separate crashes that occurred near one another. One incident involved an ambulance that crashed while it was en route to a call, leading to five individuals being transported to the hospital. According to a statement from the St. Lucie County Fire District, detailed in a WPTV news report, the ambulance driver and paramedic suffered injuries that were described as not life-threatening. A further three patients were also taken to medical facilities for treatment.
In a separate incident, a fatal collision on Interstate 95 involved a motorcycle and two other vehicles, which resulted in significant traffic backups and lane closures. The crash, which occurred at about 6:30 a.m. at mile marker 117, was confirmed by the Florida Highway Patrol and caused the closure of all southbound lanes of the highway for several hours. The name of the victim in the I-95 crash has, so far, been withheld from the public.
With both accidents causing an upheaval on the roadways, traffic flow was eventually restored to normal levels by midday. The St. Lucie County Fire District clarified on their Facebook page, as FOX29 reports, that the incident involving the ambulance was not related to the earlier motorcycle wreck, as they were responding to a different call at the time of the accident.
Police officials confirmed that, at the time of the ambulance's accident, no patients were being transported in the vehicle. However, it was operational with its lights and sirens active. As the investigation into the causes of both collisions continues, the authorities have not disclosed any additional information about the ambulance crash and the current condition of those injured in the incident.
