The Port St. Lucie Police Department has reported the arrest of Aja Zukas, owner of Paws Paradise pet grooming salon, on charges of animal cruelty. The arrest followed a complaint and subsequent police investigation that uncovered a malnourished dog left in the salon for more than 24 hours. In a statement obtained by WPTV, Zukas denies that the dog, a 9-year-old Terrier mix named Boo, was neglected, claiming the longest he had been left alone was five hours.

Upon discovery, Boo showed signs of severe malnutrition and cachexia, characterized by minimal muscle mass. He also had pressure sores, small wounds on the edges of his ears, and pale gums, which may indicate anemia, as CBS12 details. Additionally, the salon's condition, found with feces and urine on the floor alongside a large quantity of shredded paper towels, indicated Boo's living circumstances were less than ideal.

According to CBS12, a veterinary examination conducted after Boo was taken into custody revealed that he had gained 6 pounds in 11 days of care and had a prognosis for recovery. The staff at an emergency veterinary clinic had found remnants of tissue paper in Boo's feces, which he consumed out of starvation.

Zukas, who has stepped down from her business amid the backlash, maintains her innocence and expressed to WPTV that she has been battling to keep Boo's weight up for ten years due to his tendency to eat fabric. Nevertheless, a mistake was admitted after being taken into custody as per the CBS12 report. Zukas seemingly acknowledged that Boo was a problem dog who "would often escape from his threat" and that she did not afford him the care he required.

As the legal process unfolds, the situation brings to light the frail balance between business ownership, animal welfare, and the vigilance required in pet care.
