The Portland City Council has solidified its commitment to the arts with the unanimous approval of a dual project to modernize and expand the city's performance venues. The plan, which includes a thorough renovation of the current Keller Auditorium and the creation of an additional, modern facility at Portland State University, promises to bolster the cultural landscape of downtown Portland. This development comes in response to concerns regarding the Keller's ability to withstand a major earthquake and signifies a proactive step in preserving and enhancing the city's performing arts scene.
Thursday's decision comes after months of deliberation and planning, with KOIN reporting the collaboration between Portland State University and the Halprin Landscape Conservancy to execute these two projects. The resolution steered these entities to unite and conceive a comprehensive strategy that not only secures the future of the existing auditorium but also embraces the potential of a new space—thus ensuring Portland remains a hub for Broadway plays even as the Keller undergoes its transformation.
As per OPB, Donnie Oliveira, Deputy City Administrator for Community and Economic Development, remarked on the magnitude of this endeavor, "This is a really important moment in this process. But there’s still a long way to go." With this decision, the council has set the stage for a series of studies, including a market feasibility study to ascertain the viability of supporting two theaters and to delve into specifics such as seating capacity.
Further details were brought to light by KATU, which revealed that the Keller Auditorium will remain operational as the new venue is constructed on the PSU campus. According to the timeline sketched, the PSU site is expected to debut in 2029, enabling the Keller to close for renovations and aiming for a grand re-opening in 2031. This well-coordinated plan ensures that the city will continue to welcome large performance events without interruption during the periods of construction and refurbishment.
