A man has been arrested and faces multiple felony charges after a standoff with Portland Police during the early hours of yesterday morning. According to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau, members of various specialized units, including the Special Emergency Reaction Team and the Crisis Negotiation Team, served a high-risk search warrant at a residence in the Overlook neighborhood related to several violent crimes.
The incident unfolded in the 4500 block of North Maryland Avenue, and the suspect resisted officers' commands to exit the property. At the time, the two other individuals inside the residence complied without incident and were not charged. The search warrant, as reported on the Portland Police Bureau's official website, was part of an investigation into firearms-related crimes.
After attempts to negotiate and de-escalate the situation failed, officers evacuated the surrounding units for safety and deployed irritant gas. The man engaged in a physical altercation with a police K9, which resulted in no injury to the dog, according to the police report. Following the altercation, he broke into another evacuated apartment but was finally arrested after additional gas was used.
Portland Fire and Rescue paramedics, accompanying the police SERT team, treated the suspect at the scene before he was taken to the hospital. The suspect, identified as Torrie C. Bulson-Bratton, age 42, was later charged with a range of crimes, including robbery, unlawful use of a weapon, and assaulting a law enforcement animal.
During the search, officers also seized a semiautomatic handgun, among other items, which are displayed in photographs attached to the police news release. Fortunately, no gunshots were fired during the incident, and the police expressed their appreciation for the patience of the local community, who were inconvenienced by the operation.
