PortMiami is set to become more environmentally friendly with a $25 million grant from the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) program. The U.S. Department of Transportation has designated these funds for the port's Electrification Project, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on diesel equipment. According to a Miami-Dade County release, the project will enable the purchase of electric and hybrid cargo handling machinery, upgrade electric reefer outlets, and build the infrastructure needed for charging this new equipment.

The grant, announced by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, is part of a larger federal initiative providing over $4.2 billion for infrastructure development nationwide. PortMiami will use its share for hybrid trucks, electric terminal tractors, dual charging stations, and other eco-friendly upgrades. This effort aims not only to reduce emissions but also to create job opportunities through the Port's workforce development programs, as noted by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

Miami-Dade County's commitment to sustainability is highlighted by PortMiami's $4.2 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) over the next five years, focused on achieving net zero emissions. According to Miami-Dade County's website, the port aims to become the first seaport in the nation with a net zero carbon emission supply chain. This goal aligns with the county's target to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030.

The plan includes transitioning to electric gantry cranes and cargo handling equipment, as well as introducing hybrid/electric tugboats and renewable energy sources like solar power. PortMiami, known as the Cruise Capital of the World and a key Global Gateway of the Americas, supports over 340,000 jobs and contributes $61 billion annually to the local economy.
