Last night's Dodgers World Series victory over the Yankees quickly devolved from joyous celebrations to chaotic unrest, resulting in property damage and several arrests. As per KTLA, not long after L.A. secured the win in New York, fans flocked in their thousands near Dodger Stadium, downtown, and East L.A., igniting fireworks, honking horns, and waving flags. However, the Los Angeles Police Department had to declare the gathering unlawful by 10 p.m. as the celebrations spiraled out of control.
In Echo Park, the festivities took an ominous turn when a Metro bus was vandalized and set ablaze around 12:50 a.m., as reported by NBC Los Angeles. This act of destruction carried out by what LAPD described as a "hostile crowd" led to the destruction of the bus, although thankfully the bus operator and five passengers were evacuated safely.
Despite the disruption, the city returned to a semblance of order by Thursday morning, with police lifting the citywide tactical alert while continuing patrols in the impacted areas. Metro Communications Director Dave Sotero expressed the agency's feelings about the unfortunate events, stating "Metro is disappointed and angered by the senseless act of vandalism on one of our buses following the Dodgers World Series Win earlier this evening," in an email obtained by NBC Los Angeles. With further details still unfolding, LAPD continues to investigate the full scope of last night's incidents.
