Protest and vandalism shook the calm of the University of Minnesota as demonstrators staged a disruptive event on Monday. According to the university's official statement, gathered protesters marched to Morrill Hall around 4 p.m. after starting their protest on the lawn in front of Coffman Memorial Union. The incident quickly escalated inside the building as the crowd began to spray paint walls, obscure security cameras, break windows, and barricade exits, trapping some staff members inside for an extended period.
The campus police were promptly called to manage safely to extricate trapped employees and address the property damage. With assistance from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the University of Minnesota Police Department made their entry into Morrill Hall at approximately 5:40 p.m. During the operation, 11 individuals were arrested, but details regarding their identities or the full scale of the destruction have not been released yet.
While it remains largely unclear what sparked the protest and subsequent vandalism, the university is actively investigating the affair. The official statement from the University of Minnesota provided no insight into the motivations behind the protest nor commented on any demands that might have been issued by the demonstrators.
Evidently, the campus community and the wider public will have to wait as the authorities continue to piece together the events. However, the university administration stands in the wake of assessing the implications of the damage wrought by the protesters’ actions and the subsequent law enforcement response. Further updates on the investigation and any charges pressed will have to be forthcoming from the University of Minnesota or law enforcement agencies involved.
