Community members and city officials gathered last Saturday to clean debris around Providence Lake, located in Providence Park. The volunteers participated in the Rivers Alive initiative, which focuses on the preservation and beautification of Georgia's waterways.

High winds and heavy rains from storm Helene earlier this autumn resulted in an unusual amount of litter in Providence Park. Debris along the lake's shores included hazardous fishing lines that were discarded, which can pose risks to wildlife. According to a report by the City of Milton, these materials can entangle or be ingested by birds and fish. Additionally, improperly discarded fishing lines can disrupt regular recycling processes.

Providence Park has installed a collection bin for fishing lines on the pier to manage this type of waste. In addition to the fishing lines, volunteers filled five contractor-sized bags with various litter, including aluminum and plastic bottles, and retrieved a stray kayak paddle from the water's edge. This effort reflects the community's focus on maintaining a clean environment for both people and wildlife.

This year's clean-up was part of Rivers Alive's larger mission, an annual state-wide initiative aimed at clearing waterways and raising awareness about the importance of maintaining clean waters in Georgia. The project has drawn attention to the cause and encourages local participation in future events. Those who missed this year's activities can plan to take part in the 2025 Rivers Alive efforts, as proclaimed by the City of Milton.
