Lake Johnson Park-goers in Raleigh can now cross Avent Ferry Road with increased safety, thanks to the city's latest installation of a new pedestrian beacon system. The Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) system, which was recently installed at the park's crosswalk connecting the trail to the parking lot, aims to reduce pedestrian crashes significantly, according to city officials on the City of Raleigh website.
The RRFB works by flashing warning lights when a pedestrian activates them, thereby catching drivers' attention to yield to foot traffic, this system has been recommended by the Federal Highway Administration as it has shown to make drivers more likely to stop. Studies cited by the administration suggest the presence of RRFBs "would be expected to reduce pedestrian crashes by about half" by providing a clear, flashing signal that someone intends to cross the road, as mentioned on the City of Raleigh website.
To engage the new safety feature at the Lake Johnson Park crosswalk, pedestrians simply need to press a button which activates the warning lights for drivers; however, they are advised to ensure that vehicles have stopped before proceeding to cross the street. The installation was completed by Raleigh's Signs and Pavement Markings group along with the Traffic Signals group, who are being thanked for their efforts in improving local road safety.
