Especially for sensitive items like financial documents, contacting the sender immediately if they do not arrive as expected is advised. The police also highlight alternatives such as using PO boxes or Amazon lockers and request residents to ask for signature confirmation upon delivery for important packages. They stress that if a resident witnesses a mail theft in progress, they should not intervene but instead observe and report the crime to law enforcement. When a mail theft victim, the local law enforcement and USPS should be immediately contacted to report the incident. Having no suspect information, victims can file an online report. The police underline, reversing charges on fraudulent purchases typically requires a report number from local enforcement, which is integral for financial institutions and merchants.
