Outdoor enthusiasts in the Sacramento area are set to have a new destination for their gear and apparel needs as REI Co-op is expanding its presence with a store in Elk Grove. According to a news release from last Friday, cited by The Sacramento Bee, the new store is part of a broader strategy to open a total of six locations in 2025, aimed at supporting the active lifestyles of REI members and outdoor communities.
REI Co-op, identifying itself as the nation's largest consumer cooperative, offers an extensive range of products that includes everything from clothing and shoes to backpacks and tents for a variety of outdoor activities. The upcoming Elk Grove store will take up a 22,127-square-foot space at Laguna Gateway Shopping Center, previously occupied by a Bed Bath & Beyond store that closed in 2023. "Cities that will have new stores represent communities that serve as a gateway to some of the country’s most incredible natural places and where our members currently live or destinations where they love to play outside," stated Mary-Farrell Tarbox, REI vice president of stores, as reported by FOX40.
The additional locations announced include Carlsbad in Southern California, as well as Amherst, New York; and Lynnwood, Washington. A Durango, Colorado, location is also scheduled to welcome customers in the summer of 2025, whereas Prosper, Texas, and St. George, Utah, are on the docket for 2026 openings. Each store aims to provide a full-service bike shop staffed by certified mechanics, alongside a comprehensive product range catered to camping, cycling, hiking, running, rock climbing, and various water and snow sports. This strategy reflects REI's dedication to being more than a retail outlet, instead crafting itself as a hub for community engagement and outdoor preparedness, as per Sacramento Bee.
For those marking their calendars, the grand opening of the Elk Grove store is planned for the spring of 2025, although no specific date has been given yet. Meanwhile, the Chico location is also slated to launch in the springtime of the same year, offering Northern Californians additional options to equip themselves for their outdoor pursuits. As anticipation mounts for these openings, REI continues to stand as a prominent figure in the retail space for outdoor enthusiasts, underpinned by a cooperative structure that emphasizes customer connection and the shared love of nature.
