A kiteboarder's afternoon on the waters off Kailua Beach took a dangerous turn Tuesday when he collided with Popoia Island, also known as "flat island." Honolulu Ocean Safety swiftly came to the aid of the 18-year-old after a 911 call was placed shortly after 5 p.m., according to a report by Hawaii News Now.
Lifeguards launched a rescue ski and were able to secure and bring the distressed kiteboarder back to the mainland. Once ashore, the lifeguards rendered medical aid until Honolulu Emergency Medical Services arrived. The young man, who was reported to have suffered lacerations on his legs and a potential back injury, was taken by Honolulu EMS to a trauma center, detailed in a coverage by KITV.
Ocean conditions at the time of the accident were described as very windy and choppy which presents clear dangers to even experienced water sports enthusiasts. Despite these hazards, Honolulu Ocean Safety emphasizes an ongoing commitment to beachgoers' safety and reminds all to exercise caution concerning weather conditions while at sea.
The kiteboarder's equipment was retrieved by the lifeguards approximately 400 yards down the beach from the site of the accident. Officials said the man suffered lacerations to his legs and possible back injuries.
