As the Rocklin community solemnly marked a decade since the tragic loss of two local law enforcement officers, the Rocklin Police Department took to social media to honor their lives and sacrifices. On October 24, 2014, Placer County Sheriff's Office Detective Michael Davis Jr. and Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Deputy Danny Paul Oliver were both killed in the line of duty, according to the Rocklin Police Department.
The Rocklin Police Department's Facebook post recounts the fateful day when Deputy Oliver, part of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Problem-Oriented Policing unit, was fatally shot in a motel parking lot while investigating a suspicious vehicle. The tragedy escalated as the suspects embarked on a violent crime spree across the region, leaving a trail of carjackings and shootings in their wake. Suspected in the day's earlier shooting, when they arrived at Auburn, Detective Davis and another deputy, who was acting on a tip about a suspicious vehicle, were shot—Detective Davis, fatally as he exited his patrol car.
Survived by his wife and two daughters, Deputy Oliver served his community for 15 years, as per the Rocklin Police Department. His commitment to public service is reflected in the longevity of his career and the void his loss has left amongst his family and colleagues. Detective Davis also dedicated 15 years to the Placer County Sheriff's Office. Carrying on a legacy of law enforcement in his family, Detective Davis's death came on a haunting anniversary—the same day his father, Detective Michael Davis Sr., lost his life in the line of duty 26 years prior while serving the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.
Anniversaries like these inevitably reopen deep wounds, bringing back memories of days the community would rather forget, but also ensuring the bravery of those who have fallen is never forgotten. The Rocklin Police Department and surrounding communities joined in reflection and respect, vowing to carry forward the memory of Deputy Oliver and Detective Davis's service and sacrifice.
