Governor Greg Abbott extended congratulations to the City of Rockwall upon their recent designation as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas, as announced by the Office of the Texas Governor. Rockwall, which has completed a thorough certification process, is the fifth community to receive this accolade in the program's inaugural year, signaling its dedication to levering tourism for economic growth and job creation.

"Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas,” Abbott stated. The tourism sector's contribution to Texas's financial well-being is substantial, with travelers generating over $193.8 billion in 2023 and supporting 1.3 million jobs. According to the Office of the Texas Governor, the designation not only means recognition but also stands as an invitation for other Texas communities to participate in fostering local tourism and economic opportunity.

Rockwall offers an array of attractions, blending lakeside activities with shopping, dining, and entertainment, creating an attractive North Texas destination. Tim Fennell, Travel Texas Director, praised the city's contribution to the regional tourism industry. “Rockwall’s recognition as a Tourism Friendly Texas Community highlights its important role in driving tourism across the region,” Fennell said, signaling the bright future of the area as a visitor hot spot, as mentioned by the Office of the Texas Governor.

Local officials, including Rockwall Mayor Trace Johannesen and Senator Bob Hall, echoed sentiments of pride and optimism for the impact on Rockwall's future. Mayor Johannesen stated the designation would enhance promotion efforts and strengthen community partnerships, while Senator Hall remarked on tourism’s ability to boost the local economy and foster job creation. Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman Shane Hollas also shared his excitement, noting the honor reflects their warm, visitor-oriented mindset, as per the Office of the Texas Governor. “We are thrilled to announce that Rockwall has been recognized as the fifth city in Texas to earn the prestigious designation of a Tourism Friendly Texas Community,” Hollas told the chamber.

The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program is open to local governments or non-profit organizations that lead tourism promotion efforts. Designed to nurture relationships essential for tourism development, the program also educates local leaders on tourism's significance and provides resources for strategy formation. Travel Texas, housed within the Governor's Economic Development & Tourism Office, markets Texas as a travel destination to out-of-state and international markets, aiming to increase tourism-generated revenue and employment.
