Rutherford County residents and their neighbors have a chance to safely dispose of their household hazardous waste this weekend. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) is rolling in with its mobile collection service on Saturday, Nov. 2.
The service will be available at the Murfreesboro Solid Waste Department, located at 4765 Florence Rd., from 8 a.m. to noon. "We want it to be convenient for Tennesseans to recycle household hazardous waste, and this collection service is a great way to show that commitment," said TDEC Commissioner David Salyers, as cited by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Participation isn't limited by residency, so for those living outside Rutherford County, this is an opportunity to participate as well.
Since 1993, TDEC's initiative has seen more than 373,000 Tennessee households part with over 24 million pounds of potentially dangerous materials. This includes an eclectic mix of cleaning fluids, pesticides, mercury-containing gadgets, fluorescent lamps, and old batteries. If you're unsure what qualifies, a contact at the event, Bishop Wagener, can be reached at (615) 295-9716 for guidance. There's no cost and appointments aren't necessary unless you're a business or non-household entity needing to dispose of Very Small Quantity Generator Waste.
