Rutherford County has been hit by a bold scam involving artificial intelligence, where fraudsters have stolen thousands of dollars using advanced technology. According to WSMV, a resident was tricked into transferring $7,500 in bitcoins, believing she was avoiding arrest for missing jury duty.

The scammers used AI to convincingly mimic Sheriff’s Captain Will Holton's voice, persuading the victim to withdraw money from her bank without telling the teller why. In a statement to WGNS Radio, Captain Holton said, "If we need you, we will come to your door in uniform. Never ever share your information or pay someone over the phone by bitcoin or any other transaction."

The threat from these scams goes beyond immediate financial loss; they also manipulate trust in authority. Sheriff’s Detective Jesse Gammel, investigating the case, explained how efficiently the scam operates. Once the money was deposited into a bitcoin ATM at a convenience store and moved to a wallet controlled by the scammers, it was quickly transferred across various wallets, making recovery unlikely. Gammel stated, "It is digital currency in a digital wallet that only the scammer has control over," in a post on the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page.

While the investigation continues, authorities have low expectations of fully recovering the lost funds. Gammel noted, "Each case varies by circumstances," in the same Facebook post. The community is urged to be cautious if they receive similar calls, especially those showing the Sheriff's Office dispatch number. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office has clearly warned that such calls are likely scams.
