The City of Sacramento has recently updated the public on its continual efforts to quickly address the issue of homelessness. Detailed in their latest progress report for the week of October 14 to October 20, the City's Incident Management Team has remained steadfast in responding to calls and providing support to unsheltered individuals, as per an article on the Sacramento City Express, the city's news blog.
During this seven-day period, the Sacramento City had received 622 calls through its 311 customer service, explicitly concerning homelessness. The City's Incident Management Team managed to close 1,112 calls, which means that they either found a solution to help those involved or the reported concerns were no longer present upon inspection. This information was provided by the Sacramento City Express.
Ongoing outreach programs by the Department of Community Response saw the enrollment of 81 individuals into databases aimed to directly connect them with available resources like shelters. Furthermore, this initiative resulted in securing accommodation for 24 people at either the City’s Roseville Road campus or the Outreach and Engagement Center. As of Tuesday, the Roseville Road campus had no Pallet homes or trailers available, yet there were 12 open spaces at the Outreach and Engagement Center, with an average of 21 available spaces at City-funded shelters, as per the Sacramento City Express.
In addition, a substantial amount of 168,600 pounds of waste was reportedly cleared away by the City, indicating an ongoing commitment to not just relocate or to simply aid those unsheltered, but also to attend to the environmental footprint in spaces frequented by homeless populations. The Sacramento Police Department's IMPACT team, which is a part of the IMT, was noted to have achieved compliance 21 times in cases pertaining to issues like sidewalk obstruction and unlawful camping, "meaning that either the issue was remedied, compliance was achieved, or the issue no longer existed when City staff inspected the site," according to the Sacramento City Express report.
The City also maintains a data dashboard that provides an overarching view of the IMT's efforts, allowing the public to easily track and understand the progress made. This dashboard accounts for the actions taken by the Incident Management Team week by week, stretching back to September 2023 and displays cumulative data on outreach, compliance, and cleanup activities.
