Last Friday, a Sacramento court sent a clear message against the sexual abuse of children by sentencing Jerry Egy, aged 47, to a term of 71 years to life in prison for his crimes involving multiple child victims. Egy's sentencing came after he pled no contest to charges including three counts of forcible lewd act upon a child, two counts of lewd act upon a child, and forcible oral copulation, with additional admissions to allegations of multiple victims, according to a statement from the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.
The victims of Egy's reprehensible actions were largely under the tender ages of 11, and his pattern of abuse spanned several years, causing irreversible trauma--two of the children were assaulted when they were between 8 and 11 years old, one of whom was subjected to repeated abuse over the course of these crucial, formative years, Egy told this child to keep the abuse a secret, while he held another victim down and forced her to watch explicit videos. In his 40s, Egy gave methamphetamine to a teenage girl and then forced her into acts of oral copulation, demonstrating a chilling pattern of coercion and manipulation in these acts he also sexually assaulted two 13-year-old children when he was around 19 to 20 years old, as reported by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.
Despite the severity of Egy's sentence, there's a stark reality facing Californians regarding the state's Elder Parole program, as per the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. Egy could be eligible for an Elder Parole hearing in about 18 years, considering he will have served 20 years of his sentence by the time he turns 50, and factoring in in-custody credits, an aspect of the legal system some argue needs reevaluating in light of such egregious cases.
