In a court ruling that reverberates with the ongoing conversation about gun violence, Nathaniel Melendez, aged 21, has been sentenced to spend the next seven decades of his life in prison. The conviction comes after Melendez's involvement in a fatal shooting at a house party in San Antonio in 2022, where 16-year-old Evelyn Gumbardo lost her life. According to a report by KSAT, the murder conviction was handed down yesterday.
During the trial, Melendez argued that he feared for his life and blamed his paranoia on drugs he had taken. Despite this defense, the jury found him guilty. The prosecution sought a harsh sentence due to Melendez's criminal history, while the defense requested 20 years. However, Judge Ron Rangel imposed a 70-year sentence, meaning Melendez cannot seek parole for at least 30 years.
Evelyn Gumbardo's mother, Evelyn Ynostrosa, offered a victim impact statement: "From mother to mother, no one should ever have to go through something like this," Ynostrosa said, as reported by KSAT. Addressing Melendez, she conveyed hope for his rehabilitation: "I hope you get the proper treatment that you deserve."
Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales spoke about the case, stressing the epidemic of gun violence: "Evelyn will never get the opportunity to graduate from high school or do all things that teenagers get to experience. Her life was cut too short by the defendant. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Evelyn," in a statement obtained by KENS 5.
