The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance will add another layer of excitement to the 136th Rose Parade® on New Year's Day. Returning for its fourth appearance, the zoo has designed a float to captivate parade viewers with its representation of Asian ecosystems and the organization's conservation efforts. Prime among these is the homage to the newly arrived giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, symbols of international cooperation in wildlife preservation.
Governor Gavin Newsom recently designated August 8 as "California Panda Day," honoring the arrival of these furry ambassadors, the first to set foot in the United States in 21 years. It's a significant event, not just for the state but for conservationists and panda enthusiasts worldwide, and this float surely acts as an extension of that celebration. According to San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, their presence in the Rose Parade is a display that "celebrates the power of nature and conservation as a unifying force," as said by Paul A. Baribault, president and CEO of the organization.
Besides the pandas, Lucas and Adira, the zoo's red pandas, will be featured in animated scenarios on the float, adding charm with their treetop antics. Here's also where you'll witness the grandeur of Connor the Malayan tiger, bringing the rich biodiversity that the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park aim to protect to the forefront. These animals are not merely attractions but keystones in their habitats, which the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance seeks to remind us of through their detailed and endeavoring float creations.
Critical to the float's authenticity is the use of real plants, including bamboo, grown by the zoo's horticulture teams. It's a nod to the organization's dual role as a leading zoological institution and an accredited botanical garden. The previous floats from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance have garnered acclaim, with 2024's "It Began With a Roar" float celebrating 107 years of history and winning the Sweepstakes Award for most beautiful entry. In 2023's parade, they received the Animation Award with a float-themed "Celebrating 50 Years of Conservation" in tribute to the 50th anniversary of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
