Aphotic, the Michelin-starred SoMa neighborhood seafood restaurant, has revealed it will serve its last meal in December. According to a post made today by Aphotic’s Instagram, Chef and owner Peter Hemsley has cited the city's challenging conditions for fine dining establishments as a major factor influencing the decision.
The note from Hemsley shared a mix of pride and lament about the state of the industry: “As all residents of SF know, these are tough times for fine dining operators,” the chef wrote. Despite the challenges, Aphotic introduced four original tasting menus under his leadership. He earned a Michelin Star, a Green Star, and a distinction for its bar program in under two years. Yet, Hemsley points out, “miracles do not last forever.” According to the Instagram announcement, Aphotic's final chapter at 816 Folsom Street is set for December 21.
During its operation, Aphotic won acclaim for its Michelin recognition and commitment to sustainable seafood sourcing, a mission that earned them the Michelin Green Star. Eater San Francisco highlighted the restaurant's unique dishes and innovative beverages, such as Aphotic head distiller and bar director Trevin Hutchins’ award-winning “sea-inspired” beverage program.
Hemsley reflected on the dynamics between high-end dining experiences and consumer expectations in a September interview with Eater San Francisco. “People are still sticker-shocked,” Hemsley explained, emphasizing his refusal to compromise on quality despite the pressures of maintaining profitability. The restaurant's approach to customer service is meticulous, attending to the smallest details to ensure diners perceive their experience as valuable. Aphotic's team aims to see out their final weeks in the spirit of celebration, acknowledging every milestone reached since its inception.
