Two Seattle high schools, Nova High School and Garfield High School, were strained into lockdown on Thursday afternoon following reports of gunfire in the vicinity. Seattle Police received notifications of gunshots around 1:44 p.m. near the intersection of 24th Ave and E Cherry St, as detailed by FOX 13 Seattle. A sense of urgency enveloped the schools as the sounds of the gunshots prompted immediate precautionary measures. As reported by one Garfield High student, Theo Mack, to FOX 13 Seattle, "I was just chilling in family health, doing my work," when the incident unfolded, highlighting the jarring nature of the event for those present.
Further investigation revealed that during the drive-by incident, a bullet pierced through a second-story window at Nova High School. In a statement provided to KING 5, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell commented, "Today’s shooting outside Nova High School is yet another reminder of the senseless gun violence that is too common in our city." The mayor emphasized that while there were no injuries, acts of violence such as these cannot be deemed acceptable. Witnesses claimed to have seen two vehicles hastily flee the scene, reportedly those involved in exchanging gunfire.
The circumstances preceding the shooting were initially unclear, and the Seattle Police Department continued to sift through details to ascertain what exactly had occasioned the violence. The school district employees were the first to report the damage from the bullet as it punctured a high school window, a sobering indication of how close the threat came to harming students and staff.
This incident serves to reinforce the gnawing concern over gun violence that has repeatedly brushed the edges of everyday life in Seattle. In a joint statement cited by KOMO News from Mayor Harrell and Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth, the determination is articulated "to making the right investments and enacting the right policies to support this mission and end the scourge of gun violence." Community leaders are now faced with the dual challenge to not only address the immediate repercussions of such events but to also engage in deeper conversations around policy reform and the systemic issues that perpetuate this cycle of violence.
