In the wake of a shooting incident near Nova High School, Seattle's leadership is taking steps to beef up security in school vicinities. Mayor Bruce Harrell together with Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth issued a joint statement in which they elaborated on plans to ramp up safety measures. Thankfully, the recent gunfire resulted in no physical injuries, but the psychological toll on students, educators, and the community is undeniable.
Key to the city's proposed safety enhancements are technological advancements, "The mayor’s proposed budget includes an expansion of recently approved safety technologies to the areas surrounding Nova, Garfield, and the Central District," the statement read. Harrell's budget is yet to be approved by the City Council, but should it pass, it aims to integrate CCTV and a Real Time Crime Center to heighten responsiveness to gun violence, aid evidence collection, and work towards shooting prevention.
Dr. Brent Jones, Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the value it could bring to community welfare. "Mayor Harrell’s proposal to expand safety technologies like CCTV cameras around Nova and Garfield is an investment in the safety of our students by helping to deter criminal behavior and hold offenders accountable,” said Jone, as per the Seattle Office of the Mayor.
The statements from city officials underline a unified stance against the pervasiveness of gun violence affecting local schools. Echoing a sentiment of resilience, "Every person in the Central District, in District 3, and in every neighborhood across Seattle deserves to be safe and to feel safe, and we remain committed to making the right investments and enacting the right policies to support this mission and end the scourge of gun violence," the joint statement concluded.
