The Metropolitan Police Department has reported the apprehension of a suspect linked to the burglary of a business in Southeast, a crime involving the brazen theft of an ATM from an establishment located on the 2000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. According to the MPD's official announcement, the incident unfolded on September 12, 2024, when three individuals broke into the premises around 1:08 a.m., proceeding to remove and load the ATM into a vehicle, which was then driven away by a fourth operative.
The breakthrough in the case came following the intensive efforts of detectives, leading to the October 1st charging of Craig Eugene Swann, a 55-year-old resident of Capitol Heights, MD, with Burglary in the Second Degree, his being the second apprehension in this ongoing investigation, with a 59-year-old man previously arrested and charged with Theft in the Second Degree and Unlawful Entry on the very day of the burglary. The case, still active, beckons those with insights to come forward with information, the MPD urging witnesses not to intervene but to contribute via their hotline at (202) 727-9099 or by texting the tip line at 50411, doing so may, in fact, make them eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their intelligence precipitates an arrest and indictment in the District of Columbia.
While the scope of the crime appears contained to a finite group of suspects and their orchestrated attempt to pilfer the establishment, the police have not disclosed if the already captured ATM has been recovered among the swirl of investigative measures taken to piece together the full narrative of that September night.
