As announced by Superintendent Dr. David Glasner, Shaker Heights High School will introduce a new weapons detection system by December 2nd to elevate security measures. The decision follows incidents, including one in which a student brought a gun to a varsity football game on September 14. According to Cleveland19, the student was stopped before entering the stadium, prompting increased security measures.
While details about the specific type of system have not been disclosed, the school administration is currently reviewing various options and seeking insight from neighboring districts. Dr. Glasner emphasized, "We also know that school culture cannot be separated from school safety and that the best safety system in any school is building strong, positive relationships between students and adults," a sentiment he shared in a statement obtained by an international news outlet, Solondais. This approach to heighten school security seems to be done in conjunction with efforts to improve the school's culture.
As reported by News 5 Cleveland, an interim measure has the high school checking students and searching bookbags at the entrance each morning. These protocols led to longer lines outside the school, reflecting the heightened security concerns. Dr. Glasner stated, "This pilot will allow us to test how well the system works, what challenges it poses for students and staff, and if its use might apply to other schools and events."
The introduction of the pilot detection program arrives in the wake of a security enhancement trend in local schools, with Cleveland Heights High School also increasing security measures after multiple gun-related arrests. The Shaker Heights community, including students, staff, and families, has expressed a broad, though not uniform, support for some weapon detection systems. "Survey data from these stakeholder groups indicated that staff and families clearly favor some kind of weapon detection system at the High School. Students also favored such a system," told Glasner to News 5 Cleveland.
