Southern Illinois University Edwardsville marked a key step forward in the construction of its new $105 million health science building today. Notable attendees included SIUE leadership, Illinois Capital Development Board officials, design-build firms Clayco + Poettker, as well as local and state dignitaries. A "final pour" ceremony was held to commemorate the last structural concrete pour on the edifice. Attendees had the chance to not only tour the 176,000-square-foot facility but also leave a lasting personal mark by signing concrete columns that will soon to be enshrouded within the building's walls.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the significance of the infrastructure investment, saying, "Through Rebuild Illinois, we're making key infrastructure investments that create opportunities for Illinoisans across the state." Pritzker underscored the envisioned role of the new complex, stating, "This state-of-the-art facility will provide aspiring healthcare professionals with the tools and skills they need to succeed and lead in their field," in a statement obtained by Illinois.gov. The commitment to education stands as a testament to building up the next generation of healthcare leaders.

The new three-story structure will house both the School of Pharmacy and the School of Nursing, bringing a blend of academic classrooms, teaching and simulation laboratories, and administrative offices. Corollary site improvements aim to enhance circulation around the complex, with upgrades to parking lots and sidewalks enhancing campus connectivity. SIUE Chancellor James T. Minor, Ph.D. noted, "As the number one producer of bachelor's degrees in the Metro East, SIUE is in uniquely positioned to power the workforce of today and define the workforce of tomorrow." The project's importance was emphasized by Chancellor Minor: "The SIUE students who will be trained in this building will be critical for advancing better healthcare outcomes for real people and real families in our region." The sentiment reflects the central role education plays within the broader societal fabric.

The collaborative project team from Clayco + Poettker has kept to the timeline since mobilization in spring 2023, with the health science center's construction progressing steadily. Capital Development Board Executive Director, TJ Edwards, conveyed the state's enthusiasm: "CDB is excited to see construction advancing on the new health science building at SIUE. This transformational project will support students interested in the healthcare industry and provide opportunities for interdisciplinary partnerships, clinical training, and student research and collaboration," according to a statement from the Illinois Capital Development Board, ensuring the project aligns with state protocols for construction. With a workforce of about 70 tradespeople on-site weekly, the project has so far tallied over 60,000 work hours, utilizing upwards of 8,000 cubic yards of concrete and 905 tons of rebar. The completion of this ambitious project is anticipated in spring 2025.

Elizabeth Zucker, President of Clayco's St. Louis Business Unit, shared her pride in the team's achievement, stating, "This project has been a remarkable journey, and today's ceremony signifies not just the progress the Clayco + Poettker team has made, but the commitment and collaboration of everyone involved." She continued, "The SIUE Health Sciences Complex is set to become a beacon of innovation and learning, and we are thrilled to be a part of this transformative development and look forward to completing a space that will inspire future generations and support the pursuit of knowledge in the sciences," as mentioned in remarks covered by Illinois.gov.
