A violent collision occurred in Racine yesterday morning when a 31-year-old man, driving at excessive speeds, lost control and crashed into an empty house, igniting a fire that soon consumed the structure. The incident, reported to have taken place near 16th Street and Memorial Drive, began with the vehicle striking a pole and subsequently barreling into the house, which resulted in a rapid outbreak of flames within two minutes, although it remains unclear whether the car or the house caught first fire, according to WISN.

The driver was promptly transported to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, Racine Police Department Sgt. Kristi Wilcox confirmed, and no other injuries were reported given the house's abandoned status the house and the surrounding area were fortunately devoid of other potential victims at that hour, in a statement obtained by WISN. Investigators are currently considering whether the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash.

Local residents expressed their alarm, with neighbor Linda Jaskulske recounting to CBS 58, "I looked out the window and I saw the pole in the ground, so I came out on the porch to see if anyone needed help and the car was already in the house. It was already on fire." The conflagration caused damage not only to the initial dwelling but also impacted two neighboring homes and vehicles. Another resident, Jakob Childs, spoke of the frequent accidents along the troubled stretch, saying, "There's way too many accidents. Way too many people almost getting hit and it's just dangerous right here. The state and city they know this area is horrible for accidents, but nothing is being done."

Reflecting on the frequency of such accidents, the community is calling for increased safety measures, including the possibility of additional signage to encourage slower speeds or increased police patrols to deter reckless driving as relayed in an interview by CBS 58 with Jaskulske, who noted that "This house here has been hit at least three times from cars speeding through here."

The Racine Police Department reiterates that speed was a contributing factor in the crash and the investigation remains in progress, which was also reported by FOX 6 Now.
