The Springfield Police Department's Firearms Investigation Unit, under the leadership of Captain Brian Keenan and Sergeant Jaime Bruno, has been actively targeting open-air drug markets in the city. Yesterday and today, they took five individuals into custody in connection with drug dealings near Worthington Street and Taylor Street, according to a press release from the Springfield Police Department.
During the operation near the Friends of the Homeless shelter, with detectives planted on the streets and observing, arrested were Luis Figueroa, 56, Jansy Cruz, 35, and Jonathan Fonseca-Tirado, 32, seizing heroin, suxboxone, cocaine, and cash. Following a series of arrests surrounding this shelter, which detectives around the 700 block of Worthington Street concentrated, Abimael Roman, 45, and Katie O’Brien, 37, were also detained the subsequent day.
The specific charges against these individuals vary, from possession with intent to distribute Class A drugs to conspiracy to violate drug laws. This enforcement action aligns part of a broader crackdown that earlier this month resulted in eleven more arrests, targeting areas plagued by the drug trade like Worthington Street, Taylor Street, and Armory Street. "This is an ongoing effort to reduce open-air drug dealing in this area," the police department's statement emphasized.
Figueroa, with a prior record, is facing charges for possession with intent to distribute a Class A Drug – Subsequent Offense, and for conspiracy, as are Cruz and Fonseca-Tirado to their respective charges. Roman and O’Brien's charges saw Roman being arrested for subsequent offenses and a default warrant found for O’Brien, who is also charged with the latter.
