In a comprehensive crackdown on gang violence and drug trafficking, south St. Louis has seen a significant legal sweep that put 15 members or associates of the 55 Boyz behind bars. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, those sentenced were involved in the distribution of fentanyl and related criminal activities. Rapper Davante “Jizzlebuckz” Lindsey, 27, and Andre “Luh Half” Pearson, 28, who authorities identified as the gang's leaders, were sentenced on September 9 and September 20, receiving 12 years and 11 years in prison respectively.
Investigations into the gang's activities began as early as September 2021, with the collaboration amongst the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and IRS – Criminal Investigation. Their efforts led to seizing more than two dozen guns, over $120,000 in cash, and thousands of capsules containing fentanyl. Two homes purchased with the drug proceeds were forfeited, along with the cash value of third home. "They were both the targets of drug-linked shootings as well as d the perpetrators of such violence," U.S. Attorney Sayler A. Fleming explained in the statement on the U.S Attorney's Office.
Additional details from the investigation highlighted the use of mobile phones by the co-conspirators to facilitate drug sales. This tech-savvy approach to crime even extended to text messages advertising their illegal products, according to the U.S. Attorney's office. The defendants took their operation online, indicating a modern twist to drug trafficking schemes. The gang's reach was so extensive that some members even flaunted their wealth through extravagant possessions, like a 55 Boyz chain encrusted with approximately 2,500 tiny diamonds.
This case falls under the purview of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that unites law enforcement agencies at all levels with the communities they serve. The hope is to mitigate violent crime and gun violence, contributing to safer neighborhoods for citizens. The Department's strategy, launched last year, focuses on four core principles, including fostering trust and legitimacy within communities and supporting community-based organizations that work proactively to prevent violence.
The other individuals convicted and sentenced in connection with this case include Edward “Edot” Hopkins, Tony Evans, Araven Johnson, Douglas Simpson, Jeffrey Moore, Shawn Liggins, Omar Lewis, Willie Lindsey, Jamond “Huncho” Dismukes, Travon Weatherspoon, Birtha Lindsey, Erik Simmons, and Armani Tatum, as detailed in the press release. Four additional gang members have pleaded guilty and await sentencing on drug or gun charges, marking a significant effort by federal and local law enforcement to dismantle the infrastructure of gang-related illegal activities in St. Louis.
