As Hurricane Milton strengthens and wind gusts may exceed 100 mph, the City of St. Petersburg has issued a safety advisory for residents and nearby businesses, especially those near downtown construction sites with tall cranes. These cranes are at risk of malfunctioning due to strong winds, raising safety concerns, according to the City of St. Petersburg website.
The advisory identifies four downtown sites with tower cranes. Although city officials have communicated with developers, the fast-approaching hurricane makes it impractical to lower or secure the cranes. This poses a serious risk that must be taken seriously. As part of the emergency plan, city officials recommend that residents either relocate or shelter in place, urging those who stay to find interior spaces away from windows, like near stairwells or elevators.
The city is prioritizing the safety of its residents by taking significant precautions: roads, sidewalks, and parking areas in high-risk zones will be closed to reduce hazards from the approaching storm and its impact on cranes. The city emphasizes the importance of collective vigilance, which is crucial for protecting lives as the storm approaches.
