St. Tammany Parish has officially launched a $1.6 million project to safeguard the historic Tchefuncte River Lighthouse. Referencing details obtained from FOX 8 Live, the Tchefuncte Habitat Restoration initiative marks an essential stride in combating coastal erosion, which has jeopardized the stability of the nearly two-century-old lighthouse in Madisonville.

Funding for the ambitious restoration venture stems from the state's share of federal offshore oil royalties, specifically through the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA). As noted in NOLA.com, GOMESA has furnished Louisiana with more than $723 million since its inception in 2006, with St. Tammany Parish receiving over $8 million, including $1.8 million in 2023 alone. The projects endorsed by these funds include, a bulkhead and a 300-foot pier destined to both stabilize the shoreline and eventually grant public access to the lighthouse.

According to WDSU, Parish President Mike Cooper shared during the groundbreaking ceremony, "This is a memorable day for the citizens of St. Tammany, as we are not only protecting one of our most historic assets, but also enhancing our coastline." Beyond its historical significance, the restoration aims to bolster flood prevention and sustain the region's vital marshlands.

The project involves the installation of a breakwater intended to diminish wave erosion and the utilization of lake-dredged sediment for marsh expansion, as detailed by Madisonville Mayor Jean Pelloat who told NOLA.com, "This is an exciting day for Madisonville and St. Tammany Parish. To be able to do what we’re doing out here to restore that coastline and protect that lighthouse — it’s going to be enjoyed for generations."

The Tchefuncte Habitat Restoration project marks the first step in the parish's broader coastal fortification strategy, with 16 additional projects planned for the future. These initiatives aim to enhance the resilience of critical ecosystems, protect communities from storm surges, and safeguard historic landmarks.
