A school bus from Columbia Brazoria ISD met with an accident involving a dump truck at CR 353 and Highway 36. The crash occurred sometime after 7:30 a.m. today., as confirmed by the Texas Department of Transportation. This event led to the hospitalization of a student and the bus driver, with a total of 34 high school students ensconced in the vehicle at the time of the collision.
According to FOX 26 Houston, both injured parties were airlifted from the site. Meanwhile, State Highway 36 faced closure from FM 522 to County Road 354, as Texas Department of Public Safety's troopers and TxDOT crews navigated the aftermath, the closure causing a ripple of delay along the accustomed paths of many. While Life Flight was dispatched, the extent of the injuries remained under wraps.
As the investigation unfolded, Texas DPS Sgt. Woodard relayed to KHOU 11 that footage from the bus revealed the driver had overlooked a stop sign, an error that precipitated the unfortunate event. Columbia-Brazoria ISD offered a brief statement acknowledging the incident and the immediate actions taken "This morning, a CBISD secondary route school bus collided with a dump truck at CR 353 and Highway 36. Twenty-one high school students and one driver were on the bus at the time of the accident. The driver and one student were evaluated and are being life flighted," the district's communication read.
However, it must be noted that the district originally reported that 21 students were on the bus before correcting the count to 34, leaving a gap in the initial information dispensed to the public. The health status of the student and bus driver who were hospitalised has yet to be released.
