An incident occurred at East Technical High School yesterday when a student discharged a firearm during dismissal, with police taking the individual into custody, according to city councilperson Richard Starr.
The Cleveland Metropolitan School District reported that a confrontation between a current and a former student escalated in front of the school around 3:20 p.m., leading to one gunshot being fired, and no injuries were reported. However, the former student involved in the altercation has fled the scene and is still at large, with the police currently searching for them. The incident, which occurred at about 3:20 p.m., prompted several nearby schools to implement Code Blue safety measures as a precaution.
Cleveland Police now possess the weapon after a CMSD security officer retrieved it from the individual post-discharge, a fact noted by a police source in a Cleveland19 report. This marks the seventh firearm recovery by schools since the academic year commenced.
In a continuation of disturbing events at the educational institution, CMSD Communications Officer Candice Grose mentioned to News 5 Cleveland that East Tech High School had recently experienced a Code Red lockdown due to a break-in that resulted in arson just days before the shooting incident, adding another layer of concern around the safety and well-being of students and teachers at the school.
Richard Starr, expressing his concern to FOX8 News, stated, "Unfortunately, there is a trend in Cleveland where adults don’t know how to deal with conflict." "Kids have to worry about whether they will become victims of gun violence even while they are leaving school." He called for immediate action to end the violence and ensure that schools remain safe havens for learning and growth.
