Trader Joe’s is preparing to open a new store in Sugar Land, adding to its presence in the Houston area. As mentioned by Click2Houston, the 10,000-square-foot location at 13550 University Blvd. will open on Thursday, becoming the sixth Trader Joe’s in the region. The store will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The new Trader Joe’s is located in the University Commons shopping center and will open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:55 a.m. The site previously housed Sprouts Farmers Market, which closed in April 2023. Trader Joe’s is expected to create over 60 jobs, filled by local hires and transfers from nearby stores. "There's strong support for Trader Joe's in our community, and we'd love to have them," said Doug Adolph, communications director for the city of Sugar Land, in an interview with Covering Katy News.

Since its launch in 1967, Trader Joe’s has become a unique supermarket chain known for offering a variety of distinctive products at affordable prices. The brand does not use sales, coupons, or loyalty programs, focusing instead on consistently low pricing. This approach appeals to budget-conscious shoppers and those seeking artisanal or uncommon food items.

Community engagement is a key aspect of Trader Joe’s operations. The Sugar Land store will participate in the Neighborhood Shares Program, donating all unsold but still consumable products to local nonprofits. This aligns with the brand’s goal of being a neighborhood grocery store. The new location is the first addition to the Greater Houston area since 2016 and joins over 560 stores nationwide, as stated in a company news release reported by Covering Katy News.
