Pittsburgh residents, you can look forward to clearer skies with a side of seasonal chilliness. The National Weather Service Pittsburgh, PA, is forecasting lots of sunshine this week and a "slow warming trend beginning Thursday into the weekend."
The weather outlook doesn't stop there, though. Today, Pittsburgh should experience dry conditions and temperatures sticking close to the norm. In a classic case of nature doing its thing – or instead, cold air mixing with a warm river, expect some theatrical fog formations in those scenic river valleys early this morning. And brace for the possibility of scattered cu in the northwest flow off of Lake Erie for locations north of I-80, as per the forecast.
But don't pack away your blankets just yet. The NWS cautions that we could face frost potential on Thursday and Friday mornings, particularly across the northwest PA counties, with less than 20% elsewhere. It may not quite reach the Pittsburgh, Morgantown, or Zanesville areas, but those nurturing sensitive plants may want to give them some extra love – or protection.
However, change is on the horizon, with surface wind directions shifting come Friday. This means afternoon temperatures will climb above the norm, jumping into the 60s and even lower 70s south of the Mason-Dixon line. However, don't expect that warmth to stick around indefinitely. The coolest air so far this season arrives next week with above-average confidence of below-normal temperatures and potential widespread frost Monday night into Tuesday, the forecast warns, teetering on the edge of certainty and chance.
For aviators, benevolent high pressure is anticipated to provide mainly clear sailing and VFR conditions through Saturday. However, according to the weather service, Sunday might throw a wrench in the works with a crossing cold front that could spell restriction potential.
