A crime spree culminating in a standoff and pursuit in Lakewood ended with an arrest late Wednesday evening, officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed. The events that transpired involved a man who, after reportedly threatening his mother and committing other offenses earlier in the day, barricaded himself in a vehicle with his dog at a parking lot in the Carwood Shopping Center, as reported by CBS Los Angeles.
Sheriff's deputies laid spike strips around the car and brought in their Special Enforcement Bureau hoping to encourage the individual to surrender; the suspect was smoking cigarettes visibly defiant and non-compliant throughout the standoff as noted in a broadcast by SkyCal, and despite these measures, the standoff escalated when the man drove over the strips and a parking lot island, prompting an eight-minute chase, according to FOX LA.
The chase concluded with a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver executed by deputies at Woodruff and Carson streets after the use of non-lethal ammunition had failed to coax the man out of his SUV, details LASD Deputy Daniel Dominguez in a statement obtained by City News Service. The suspect then exited the SUV carrying his pit bull, and attempted to flee on foot, but was shortly thereafter tackled and taken into custody, sources detailed, later being transported from the scene in an ambulance with injuries that were not reported.
Notably the suspect's actions prior to the standoff included an unusual array of alleged offenses: threatening behavior towards his mother, theft of her vehicle, annoying children and the assault of a woman before the abduction of her dog which was later safely returned by a Good Samaritan, neighbors familiar with the suspect expressed hopes that the arrest may lead to him receiving needed assistance, "He's been out here, and he panhandles, and he has a dog, and I've given him food and cigarettes and all that stuff. It's good, maybe he'll get the help he needs," neighbor Barry Macrae told CBS Los Angeles.
The pursuit ended in a neighborhood near Heartwell Park in Long Beach, and while the suspect's dog initially remained with him throughout the ordeal, it subsequently ran off during the detainment process and has yet to be located, as per footage documented by freelance media firm KNN and relayed by KTLA. Due to the series of events, the suspect now faces multiple charges, concluding a disturbing series of events that prompted a large law enforcement response and ended in his apprehension.
