The Rochester Hills community remains in a state of shock after the brutal home invasion and murder of 72-year-old Hussein Murray, a local businessman, with law enforcement authorities still on the hunt for a second suspect involved in the harrowing incident.
One of the two alleged culprits, Carlos Jose Hernandez, has been arrested after masquerading as a DTE worker to gain entry into Murray's residence, WXYZ reported. Murray's wife, surviving the harrowing ordeal, recounted how Hernandez and his accomplice searched the property after binding her with duct tape supposedly looking for valuables, although authorities suspect the crime was targeted, given the couple's ownership of a pawn shop and jewelry store in Hamtramck.
Oakland County Sheriff's Office relayed details of the grim series of events that led to Murray's death, as cited by FOX 2 Detroit, beginning with the suspects, donning safety vests and claiming to be checking for a gas leak, being refused entry on Thursday and then deceiving their way in the following day, subsequently culminating in the murder of Murray.
Hernandez, presently facing extradition back to Michigan, snagged in Louisiana and also pinned with armed robbery charges in Ohio, has been slapped with charges including felony murder and two counts of unlawful imprisonment as per details from a WLNS report, the 37-year-old Dearborn resident was nabbed during a traffic stop after law enforcement recognized the vehicle linked to the Rochester Hills homicide.
Amidst the ongoing investigation and heightened community vigilance, DTE Energy has issued important precautionary advice, emphasizing the need for residents to verify any unscheduled visits through photo identification and direct communication with the company, an effort to preempt tragic repeats of such deception, consequently raising awareness around verifying the identity of utility workers and ensuring the legitimacy of their purpose on one's premises, as identified by FOX 2 Detroit.
Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information about the second suspect or the case to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP; a reward of up to $2,000 has been put forth for tips leading to an apprehension, in a joint effort to close this harrowing chapter and bring comprehensive justice for the Murray family and a community shaken to its core.
