In St. Louis Friday night, a man arrested in connection with a carjacking managed to break free from his handcuffs, steal a police car, and subsequently crash it. FOX 2 Now reports that the 23-year-old suspect was initially detained after a stolen Chevrolet Silverado, linked to an earlier carjacking, led police on a chase that ended in the 2900 block of Cherokee Street.
According to First Alert 4, after his initial arrest for vehicle theft, the suspect was handcuffed and placed in the back of a Chevrolet Tahoe cruiser. Moments later, taking advantage of the officers' brief distraction, he slipped out of the handcuffs, commandeered the cruiser, and fled the scene, only to crash the vehicle shortly thereafter into a tree at Osage and Illinois.
The aftermath of the chase led to the suspect's hospitalization before he was booked into jail. Officers received a report at 7 p.m. about a stolen Chevrolet Silverado. About an hour and a half later, they took a report of a carjacking in the 2700 block of Keokuk Street involving the same vehicle. The 26-year-old victim stated that two armed males assaulted him before stealing his Chevrolet Cruze. The St. Louis Police Department urges anyone with information about these incidents to contact the South Patrol Division or the CrimeStoppers helpline for those who wish to remain anonymous or seek a potential reward, as detailed by KSDK.
