Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, along with city council members and Skanska's leadership, convened to mark a significant progression in the development of the new East Tampa Recreation Center. The "topping out" ceremony celebrated the final placement of the 270 pre-cast structural components that form the facility's backbone.
Emerging in East Tampa's core, the $34.7-million redevelopment initiative aims to quickly transform the existing landscape. Striving to fulfill the needs of a vibrant community, the expansive 10.25-acre project includes not just a recreation center but also an array of amenities. According to the City of Tampa, these will comprise a new turf athletic field, walking trails stretching 1.5 miles, basketball and pickleball courts, an ADA-compliant playground, and an interactive splash pad.
The recreation center itself will be a 33,055-square-foot state-of-the-art complex tailored to a broad range of activities and age groups. A gymnasium, weight room, computer lab, maker space, music room, flex space, and multiple multi-purpose rooms are among the planned facilities, with dedicated spaces for seniors and a sizeable artistic sphere that includes billiards and an art room. This new facility is set to replace the currently standing community center at Fair Oaks Park.
From the groundbreaking that took place only 201 days ago, on April 12, the project has steadily moved forward. Aiming to complete the recreation center by Fall 2025, and the entire complex by Spring 2026, the development promises to not only improve but to energize community engagement and health in the area.
