An altercation between two teenagers led to a fatal shooting at a West Side apartment complex in San Antonio yesterday evening, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old boy. The San Antonio Police Department reported they responded to the 1500 block of San Carlos Street at approximately 10:40 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting.
The conflict, as stated by KENS 5, escalated when the suspect, a 14-year-old boy, allegedly taunted the victim, Joel Castillo, about his mother who had recently passed away. Having started when one of the teens brought up the other's late mother, the dispute took a turn for the worse, leading to the shooting.
Police say that during the feud, the suspect produced a firearm and shot Castillo multiple times. After being taken to a local hospital in critical condition, the teenager later died from his injuries. The medical examiner confirmed the victim's identity as 16-year-old Joel Castillo.
According to a statement given to CBS Austin, the suspect's mother was the one who provided investigators with her son's name and description following the incident. The young suspect was taken into custody shortly after he initially fled the scene.
Local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
