A 47-year-old motorcyclist was killed early Saturday after slamming into the back of a trailer on Interstate 35 North on San Antonio's Northeast Side, just before 2 a.m., between Toepperwein Road and Pat Booker Road. The man died at the scene, and his identity had not been released as of Saturday afternoon.
According to FOX San Antonio, witnesses told investigators the rider had been traveling at a high rate of speed in the far-left lane before attempting to move into the right lane. During that lane change, the motorcycle struck the back of a trailer, throwing the rider from his bike. As WOAI reported, the driver pulling the trailer stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and no additional details about the circumstances leading up to the collision have been released. It's the kind of early-morning tragedy that has become disturbingly familiar on San Antonio's highways this year.
A Deadly Pattern on Local Highways
The Northeast Side crash comes just weeks after another fatal motorcycle wreck downtown. On September 28, a motorcyclist lost control at high speed around 12:30 a.m. on the Interstate 35 southbound off-ramp to South Frio Street and Durango Street, according to the San Antonio Express-News. In that crash, the bike struck a concrete barrier, throwing the rider before the motorcycle continued forward and crashed into SAPD's Central Substation; the man was taken to a hospital, where he later died, per the newspaper's report.
San Antonio police say they have responded to 355 motorcycle-involved crashes so far this year, 19 of them fatal, with speed identified by investigators as a common factor, according to News 4 San Antonio. Three of those fatal crashes involved riders who were not wearing helmets, the station reported. Local data cited by the outlet also showed a particularly brutal stretch in which three riders died and another was critically injured across San Antonio and the surrounding area in just five days.
A Year-Over-Year Climb in Motorcycle Deaths
The toll extends well beyond any single week. San Antonio and New Braunfels recorded 48 motorcyclist deaths in 2025, according to Texas Public Radio. The area saw a total of 948 motorcycle crashes that year, leaving another 218 riders with serious injuries, the station reported, citing local crash data.
Statewide, the numbers are even starker. The Texas Department of Transportation reported 8,932 motorcycle crashes in 2025, resulting in 557 deaths and 2,468 injuries, per the same TPR report. For now, the identity of Saturday's victim remains unreleased, and investigators have not said what, if anything, will follow from their ongoing review of the Northeast Side crash.
