A 17-year-old kayaker was found off Waikiki early Thursday morning after spending approximately 10 hours at sea. The teenager had been reported missing the previous night when he did not return with his group, who planned a round trip from Ala Wai to Diamond Head.
First responders were alerted to the missing kayaker around 6:30 PM, on Wednesday, after his companions noted his absence during the return leg of their journey, according to KHON2. The Honolulu Fire Department initiated a coastal search near the reported location of disappearance, extending it up to four miles offshore in the vicinity of Diamond Head and beyond, KITV added.
The U.S. Coast Guard joined in the efforts and ultimately located the teen using an aircraft. The discovery was made at 4:20 AM offshore, fronting the Waikiki Natatorium. A C-130 aircraft from the Coast Guard marked the kayaker's position with a flare, which aided in the rescue operation.
A local boater, who happened to be in the area, assisted in transporting the young man back to Ala Wai Boat Harbor. Upon arrival, he was met by Emergency Medical Services who "administered life support 17-year-old boy once they recovered him," as they reported he was suffering from symptoms including exhaustion, dehydration, and exposure to cold, KITV detailed in their coverage.
Following his rescue, the teen was taken to a local hospital for treatment. It is reported that he is in a serious but stable condition, dealing with the consequences of his overnight ordeal at sea, KHON2 explained.
