A tragic incident unfolded in Monroe County on Tuesday morning when a 19-year-old mother and her infant daughter were killed in a violent collision. The accident involved a head-on crash with a semi-truck, leading to several hours of shutdown of the M-50. Fox 2 Detroit reports that the crash occurred around 8 a.m. at South Custer and Lewis Avenue, where a Chevy Malibu, driven by Journee Padgett of Jackson, veered across the center line for undisclosed reasons.

Robbin Williams, a resident in the vicinity, shared with Fox 2 Detroit her experience of hearing a "big boom," followed by the sight of a car under a semi-truck, with smoke emerging from the wreckage. The Monroe County Sheriff's office and Michigan State Police arrived to conduct investigations and manage the aftermath. While the cause remains uncertain, authorities have ruled out alcohol and illegal substances, leaving the community seeking answers to the tragedy that struck this rural road often associated with speeding and previous severe accidents, according to Williams.

As per WWJ Newsradio, the young mother and her baby were declared dead following the crash that happened at approximately 8:30 a.m. The child was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. The driver of the semi, a 58-year-old man from Adrian named Douglas Millyard, was uninjured in the collision. Padgett and Millyard were both wearing seatbelts, and the infant was secured in a rear-facing car seat, a factor that highlights the crash's devastating impact despite safety measures being observed.

With the investigation ongoing, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Traffic Services Division is calling on anyone with information to come forward. ClickOnDetroit further emphasized this appeal, citing a request from authorities for witnesses to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.
