Yesterday, a harrowing incident unfolded in Pittsburgh's Allegheny Commons when police, along with SWAT, EMS, and fire department units, responded to a hostage situation that began with a domestic disturbance. According to the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department, the ordeal occurred just after 3:20 p.m. in an apartment on the 200 block of E. Ohio Street.
The situation escalated when a male, identified as Jason Zenmon Jr., 28, forced entry into the apartment following an altercation and began making threats. The concerned mother, who was outside, informed the responding officers that her two young children, a 7-month-old daughter and a 21-month-old son, were inside with their father. It became a race against as time as authorities worked to secure the safety of the minors.
Immediately, SWAT and negotiators, accompanied by EMS tactical medics and firefighters, jumped into action. While negotiators managed to establish contact with Zenmon and urged him to give up without violence, SWAT strategists concurrently prepared to intervene. They created a diversion, allowing them to remove the children from the apartment safely. According to reports, the children were promptly evaluated by medics at the scene and returned to their mother's care.
Following the extraction of the children, the Pittsburgh Police took Zenmon into custody without further incident. A subsequent update from the department revealed that Zenmon now faces several charges. These charges include Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Terroristic Threats, Endangering the Welfare of Children, Unlawful Restraint of a Minor, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, and Defiant Trespass. He is currently being held at the Allegheny County Jail.
