A series of robberies targeting letter carriers for the U.S. Postal Service keys in Florida have led to jail sentences for three men. The latest to be sentenced is Bernard Jerome Davis III, a 20-year-old from Port St. Lucie who received a 192-month prison term, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.
Two others implicated in the heists, Jalen Dennis Elliott and Jamal Travon Brown Weathers, received sentences of 30 and 162 months, respectively. In a statement by U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe, as detailed in an official release, "The defendants brazenly terrorized loyal public servants, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers working in Florida, at gunpoint for their postal keys with the intent to steal mail from collection boxes. Their sentencing shows that the safety of U.S. Postal Service employees is of the utmost importance."
The offenses occurred over a year, from November 2022 to October 2023, and involved aggressive threats to life, including Davis' gunpoint demand from a USPS letter carrier delivering mail at an apartment complex. The same group was linked to multiple incidents across various counties involving firearm threats and the theft of postal arrow keys, which are crucial for mail collection and delivery. Juan A. Vargas, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Miami Division, emphasized that such violent acts will face serious consequences.
After their arrests and the teamwork of various law enforcement agencies, the Project Safe Delivery initiative launched by the U.S. Postal Service and U.S. Postal Inspection Service has resulted in over 287 arrests for postal-related robberies. This effort has led to a decrease in postal robberies and mail theft, indicating its effectiveness. Customers who experience mail theft are encouraged to report it quickly through the Postal Inspection Service's website or hotline. The public is also urged to report any suspected misconduct by Postal Service employees to the USPS OIG.
