Ford International Airport made headlines by intercepting two firearms at security checkpoints. As reported by MLive, the first gun was detected last Wednesday, followed by the second on Sunday.

This year, a total of 17 firearms have been stopped from being brought onto planes at the airport. Such discoveries are becoming all too common, echoing last year's total of 19. TSA officials quickly called upon airport police, who responded to the checkpoint incidents. Beyond these local incidents, TSA nationwide had over 6,700 firearms intercepted at airport checkpoints in 2023 alone, highlighting a persistent issue in air travel safety.

"Individuals who own firearms should familiarize themselves with regulations regarding where their weapons can and cannot be carried," Michigan TSA Federal Security Director Reggie Stephens stated, emphasizing the importance of knowing gun transport regulations. Stephens' remarks, cited by both MLive, carry a clear message for passengers to prepare responsibly for the screening experience to avoid risks and delays for all flyers.

Penalties for attempting to carry firearms through airport checkpoints are severe. TSA imposes civil penalties that can reach up to approximately $15,000, along with revoking TSA PreCheck® privileges for at least five years. Those cited may also be subject to enhanced future screenings. Firearms are allowed in checked baggage under strict conditions: they must be unloaded, stored separately from ammunition in a locked hard-sided case, and declared at the airline check-in counter—a process clearly outlined on TSA's website.
