Tragedy struck the shores of Oahu’s North Shore as two individuals lost their lives and one remains in serious condition following an incident that involved dangerous surf conditions. According to KITV, the victims were identified as 62-year-old Bryan Kunic of Hollister, California, and 72-year-old Laura Sue Jett of Oklahoma City; the third survivor has not been publicly identified.
Laura Sue Jett succumbed to her injuries at the hospital after being in critical condition while Bryan Kunic was pronounced dead at the scene, as the lifeguards that had arrived to commence their duty, spotting and swift to respond to the desperate cries for help under perilous six to eight-foot-high surges, on that fateful Monday morning. Spectrum Local News reported that despite the presence of signs indicating strong currents and a dangerous shorebreak, the individuals were caught up in the ocean's grip.
The emergency began as lifeguards were issuing no-swimming warnings along the shoreline. Their attention quickly shifted to distress calls, leading them to use all-terrain vehicles, jet skis, and rescue boards to retrieve the victims from the rough sea.
The cause of death for both victims is still pending, and the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has not yet provided closure for the families and the grieving community, as reported by KITV and Spectrum Local News.
