In a late-night operation, two hikers were successfully rescued from the McCormick Wilderness area in Michigamme Township. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) was alerted about the overdue hikers last Saturday evening, around 7:10 p.m., and both Marquette County Search and Rescue and deputies responded to the scene, according to Upper Michigan's Source.
The search effort involved combing the North Country Trail where the hikers were reported hiking, their last known location being south of Lake Raymond. Teams scoured the trail and the surrounding roads extensively. Both hikers were found at approximately 2:40 a.m. on Sunday "a few miles from their last location," as stated in a press release from the MCSO, per the Upper Michigan's Source.
Upon their discovery, the hikers were described as "extremely cold and wet" by the MCSO. Nonetheless, they declined medical treatment. WNMU FM reports that the hikers were subsequently transported out of the woods and to safety by the rescue personnel involved in their recovery.
Following this rescue, the MCSO has issued a reminder to the public regarding outdoor safety. "The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is reminding all people who venture outdoors to be safe and prepared," remarked the MCSO, as cited by WNMU FM and the other sources.
